Lá An Dreoilín - The Wran
A documentary I shot over a few months while in Kerry, Ireland. With amazing support from Cill Rialaig Arts Residencies.
From all over the country & world, people travel to the region of Kerry to participate in a tradition that reaches back into the distant past.
Lá An Dreoilín, or The Wran, centres around the hunting of a small bird that has ties to pagan roots. Perhaps even an enemy to such figures as St. Stephen who it betrayed in battle?
This short documentary leads up to the procession that takes place in Dingle where a form of this ancient tradition is remembered and thrives: with otherworldly straw outfits and colourful bands of musicians roaming the streets.
It explores elements of Irish folklore and how some of it has been recorded by local seanchaí - storytellers.
