<image:title>Jack ✽ Ralph - Her Mind, Unwind</image:title>
<image:caption>Her Mind, Unwind is a western set against the Australian mountains, where a woman fleeing her colonial life finds herself in a bushranging gang about to engage with the police over land disputes. The film stars Catherine Morvell, who I’ve only worked with for the first time on this film, but by gosh I’d work with again given the right script. She gives the dark mystery behind her character Belle, holding in the fury at times and letting loose when the moment is just right. Alongside are Gabriel Partington - longtime pal and star of my other shorts ‘Aboard’, ‘Path to Safety’ & ‘Lars in Love’ - who portrays a character scripted as the Poet and is always a treat to see on screen as well as work with on set. He is joined by John McCollough to fill out the three main charters. John was fantastic at holding some important moments in a long dialogue scene. Overall the film is a puzzle. But, that’s the complex that is Belle’s mind…unwinding…as she flees to the mountains in search of a free conscience. You can rent the full film through Vimeo On Demand below. Get in touch if you’d like to see it & I’d be happy to send you a free sceener!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am continually lucky to film the OK Motel events, this being the fourth I've been a part of in February 2022. This one had a fantastic lineup including RVG, Cable Ties, Good Morning, Lazertits, The Prize and special late night set from Our Carlson. There was the usual good times, dancing, friending, pool playing, mini golfing, eating 70s inspired snacks, BBQ, and pub vibes meals, and of course tequila sunrises. <image:caption>Highway hypnosis, white line fever - that strange state of mind you might have found yourself in when on a long drive…suddenly you snap out of a daydream and think, ‘How did I just drive the last few kilometres of road?’. You might not have, but your brain did. Starring Harry Musgrove & Directed by Jack Ralph. Cinematographer / Anton Trivic Composer / Lewis Coleman Editor / Jack Ralph Set Assist / Kelsey Pettifer Set Assist / Adrian Eppel Vehicle Owner / Honey Slingsby The Car / Sunny I wanted to bring this feeling to life in an exercise that I pitched to DOP Anton Trivic, we then expanded the idea & initially decided to turn it into a short film. We ended up leaving what we shot where it sits in this final piece, rather an exploration than a short. This is more a basis for what I’d really want to do given the proper circumstances, really dig into the driving scenes (which were never filmed as part of this exploration) where the character falls into hypnosis. I was lucky enough to get my brother, a brilliant actor in the theatre space as well, to play the role of the driver and explore this theme with Anton and I. We both really connected with this particular starting scene of the script, where the character leaves a roadhouse. It’s located in Batesford, sort of just out of our home town. There’s something very fitting about the glowing lights against wet roads that made the Batesford Roadhouse float like a palace on the night highway.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The first Beezal Mop to hit the local cinema screen at The Pivotonian Cinema in…hang on. Let’s step back. Beezal Mop? Uhhh - basically created for a series of short skits where we featured a character with the very name. Now we’re using it to frame what these films are. Collaborative, changing directors and genres. Not strictly a short film, not at all a trailer. It’s a pre-feature short. Specifically not trying to cram too much in before the feature film begins, but entertaining a theme with layers of depth. This one careers into the fast lane with Molly Jean - a rollerskating surgeon just trying to get her caffeine hit in time for surgery. From house to hospital we cruise along the Rollerskater’s journey. Screening before Barbie at Geelong’s finest Arthouse cinema, The Pivotonian, the Rollerskater is one of my most proud projects to date. As a whole, more of these ‘episodes’ of Beezal Mop are in production looking to hit new cinemas. I've picked this one to share because I liked the stories and character of both Adam and Marcelle, how they touch at certain points and the total change in the direction they both went. SEEK says; 'Adam worked in home loans, Marcelle was a political adviser. But what happens when the career you worked so hard for isn’t what you hoped it would be? This is the story or two unlikely career changes.' Produced by Samantha Haines DOP / Brendan Cherry Camera Operator / Drew Collins First AD / Olivia Altavita Editor / Jack Ralph</image:caption>

<image:caption>I edited this series of videos with Eric, Tom & Bruce at the helm. This is one of three, featuring an officer named Natasha. It was super fun to make a visual story along-side a narrative voice over. Victoria Police approached Eric Tom & Bruce to create a new suite of content to support their current Be A Force For Good campaign. Our aim was to create polished videos that would be of equal quality to their current TVCs running under the same campaign. To do this, we chose a specific shooting style and scripted our police officer’s voice overs to elevate the look, feel and narrative of each story. We filmed with 3 police officers over 6 shooting days to produce 27 separate video assets and a suite of 80+ stills to use across social media, website and digital.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Selling yogurt might be easy, but spitting out the bad stuff on screen is trickier. This little spot features the funny as hell Honor Wolff with direction from Colin Skyba. Formidable combo. Produced and filmed by Eric, Tom & Bruce, edited by myself. In the edit we had a few versions ranging from no spit of yogurt, to the one that you see in this cut. There was a moment where we weren’t sure if the out there takes would make it in the final piece, but so glad they did. Go eat some yogurt. Or, even better, churn up your own.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A relaxing spot directed by one of my favourite local Directors, Thuy Vy. Like how tea should feel, this one eases you back into a tropical jungle of infusion - mixing three situations with blended overlay. I akin the overlay to the brewing of tea, like the imagery is slowly infusing as we watch the advert. This occurred to me only now, writing this. I’m very sure this was Thuy’s intention, he is very intuitive. Go brew yourself a pot, chill out. Produced by The Producers, edited by myself.</image:caption>

My favourite is the chilli though, because who doesn’t love slicing chilli then touching your eyes accidentally and…well, here’s the edit. There were three spots made, a different recipe for each, this one is Chicken Mie Gorang. Produced by Eric, Tom & Bruce, edited by myself.</image:caption>

These are all for their new line of ‘Cloud Cider’ which we definitely sunk many over the course of filming these promos. In the clip we have terrific musos from bands Goldminds & Badgers. They really made this clip sing & the Goldminds song features across all edits. We wanted to catch the morning after a big night - the band waking up and hitting the day with something a little smooth, something a bit more groovy for the aching mind. Enter cider. They then go and meet their mates at a cidery to continue the binge. This was a fun one to get to work alongside the team in pre-production as well at post for editing - collaborating with Apple to ensure the MacBook animations and fake desktops were all accurate. We then shot the screens for real so the actor could have proper interactions with them, while using real-time Memoji calls on screen. Putting it together in post was then a fun balance of action vs time. The classic war! <image:title>Music Video - Going Your Way / Premieres on CLASH</image:title>
<image:caption>Lewis Coleman is a bold new voice from Australia, a songwriter whose approach is resolute and unyeilding, while also offering tenderness. At times brooding, at others fragrant and outgoing, Coleman's musicality is matched by a desire to fully express himself, to get his emotions down on tape. Definitely an artist to watch as 2020 develops, Lewis Coleman returns with his emphatic new single 'Going Your Way'. Heady, bewitching, and ultimately immersive, 'Going Your Way' is a song about attempting to process an intense emotion. He comments: “A brooding underscore of instruments searching for an answer, a song about processing disconnect, in a pool of memory.” Director Jack Ralph steers the video, working closely with the songwriter to channel "a watery pool of reflection..." Jack Ralph comments: "Lewis’ track, accompanied by a range of his own visual ideas, gave me the jumping board to dive into a conversation on memory and personal associations we place within them." "I think the close collaboration with Lewis bought about a clip that evokes exactly that - a watery pool of reflection upon which the track, 'Going Your Way', will draw you into our space of light & dark, where things you remembered may not have ever existed. Or maybe they really do."</image:caption>

<image:title>Music Video - GoOD SIDE / Premieres on NME</image:title>
<image:caption>Melbourne artist Lewis Coleman has shared a new single, ‘Good Side’, alongside launch details of his debut full-length. The single premiered with a music video directed by Jack Ralph with additional animation by Kelsey Pettifier. The track is taken from Coleman’s forthcoming debut LP, ‘Method of Places’, slated for release on November 20 via Ivy League. ‘Good Side’ is Coleman’s third single to date, following last year’s ‘Animal’ and previous single ‘Going Your Way’, which dropped earlier in May. According to a press release, Coleman spent the last five years writing songs for his debut album. Each of his singles so far represent a “micro-world containing multiple moments in time”. When viewed as an entire body of work, ‘Method of Places’ characterises Coleman’s entire young adulthood in the span of nine songs. In ‘Good Side’, he is a “15-year-old kid in Year 9, trying on corduroy pants at Savers, developing a personality, finding friends, having crushes”. ‘Good Side’ is an all-encompassing crush,” Coleman explained in a statement. “The limbo period of excitement and possibility, in combination with the fear of edging too close and dissolving the delicate fantasy.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Music Video - Lewis Coleman X FOUR SUPER8 CLIPS</image:title>
<image:caption>Together with musician Lewis Coleman, photographer Izzie Austin & animator Kelsey Pettifer I undertook four music videos for Lewis which were filmed in two days inside an amazing house on Lake Wendouree (Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung). The task of creating four, distinct clips came about. All had their own style and colour - while sitting inside this idea of a ‘mind palace’ which suited being filmed inside this house. From watching you may notice repetition of scenes, but with a different take or colour and effect. By the last clip I felt like we were coming back up to the surface of Lewis’ mind and seeing the three previous clips in one, hallucinatory montage. A lot of fun. These clips got me into the 3D camera space of After Effects which has been a fantastic journey so far - while then incorporating Kelsey’s animations throughout and finding a way to make them fit into the super8 footage. You can find Lewis Coleman’s album ,all of which these songs are from, available to listen, stream and buy right here: https://smarturl.it/MethodOfPlaces</image:caption>

<image:title>Music Video - PLASTIC PROMOS</image:title>
<image:caption>Like their name suggests, Plastic specialise in creating shapeshifting guitar-noise-pop that feels both clinically designed and effortlessly warped. Blending art-world sophistication with music nerd sensibilities and an indie-rock smirk, their debut album New Hands twists and convulses in the best way possible. Sitting somewhere between Deerhoof and Deerhunter, New Hands shines in its refusal to sit still. The record constantly veers away from any clear reference points, spiraling haphazardly into Plastic’s own idiosyncratic universe. As we journey with them through swirls of zigzagging melody, hiccuping grooves and erratic mood swings, New Hands becomes all the more intoxicating - revealing Plastic as fiercely compelling and thrillingly adventurous. With my amazing crack team of Adrian, Gemma, Even & Nathan we put out this music video, Take Your Mask Off & Love Me Tonight - a wild new direction for the band. Luckily, Juno did a couple of extra songs for us to turn into these live clips - I thank his foresight. You don’t know if he’s going to pull out the guitar and whammy his way into your guts or blow that feeble mind with a spicy beat. Watch it, take the plunge & enjoy. <image:caption>Shooting with the Fins was really cool - for one I’d been a fan for some time, so getting to work with them was a meeting of minds! It was also great to work alongside Izzie Austin who I think brings out great concepts from songs. Although I do less filming and more editing & directing these days, it was excellent to be able to get behind the lens and craft some imagery. I played around with this old TV studio lens which you could pull some nice aberrations out of. So all that rainbow goodness in the clip is practical. Big fan. ‘Sister’ is from the Dorsal Fins album ‘Star of the Show’. "Sister is about solidarity and trying to see something from someone else's perspective and then finding solidarity in that connection. <image:caption>You want to ask me my ideal project? Well you may have just found it. That feels like such a New Yorker headline, but whatever - this clip really hits me in all the right places. Getting to Direct something like this puts me into my best focus & creative mindset. The Sunfruits are a killer Melbourne band I’ve done a few things with before, but never a clip like this, so getting the chance to work with them on their new release has been just a dream puppy. Also a good song (check it out). ‘Believe It All’ is a concept bought to me by the band, which I then developed and worked into the world I wanted to see: from falling into a poster to the lead singer (played by the stunner Our Carlson) transforming into a golden star…but not too many spoilers. Alongside me I had cinematographer Scott Pope who really stuck with me through pre-production and bought so much into the project. His ability to capture the handheld look bought me new love for the style. Releasing across Rage, MTV and Music Feeds, I really dig this new song from the band & hope you also DIG this music video. Get fruity. <image:title>Music Video - Talking to yourself / Lewis Coleman</image:title>
<image:caption>Set in a wild basin called Devils Kitchen in rural Victoria, we’re already feeling a bit off with the strange rock formations that define this old quarry. Bring into the brew a bit of heady bass and Lewis’ depth in writing & we have TALKING TO YOURSELF. Part commentary on our human addiction to being ‘online’ for so much of our lives - we symbolised this loosely with the apathetic white, eerily AI designed character that Lewis is in round-about dialogues with. We shot this, alongside some more scenes over a couple of days & hope to bring out four music videos in total for the new album. Each one has its own definite style, but I’m so glad this one was first of the rank. With a range of zooming shots that dwarf human to landscape, I hope the music video either gives you a big introduction to Lewis’ music, or continues you on the path you have already found yourself on. <image:caption>The fourth of a quartet of music videos for Lewis Coleman’s album, Offline. This clip bought the three other videos we did into context. It’s a rambling seven-minute-something tune which dives in and out of a non-stop beat. We follow this rhythm into the distinct worlds created for the albums four videos: the interior scenes, outside in night time Northern suburbs, the vast outdoor fields and pine forests. I was so happy when Lewis and Darvid (Beloved) organised a listening party at Long Play to share the album. We screened all the videos to an intimate group who were so receptive and, for this clip in particular, were taken along for the ride. <image:caption>This clip was something of planet alignment: everything just clicked into place from the initial chats over Instagram with Allysha whom I had only met once about eight years prior. I had the basic idea of three distinct sections whilst retaining the feeling that this could be a live performance. This play between reality and the quite stylised was so much fun & works with the song really well. Even when I presented the mood boards to Allysha, she sent me over the photos from her album cover shoot. Without knowing it, our colours and tones were aligned (like those planets) from the beginning. Colours, tones & planets may seem different, but it’s a heck of a good start. Working alongside David McKinnar on set was crucial to the finer points of how we framed each scene, combined with Ed Bellamy on the new Trinity 2. <image:title>Music Video - Weird Fishes / Daisy Kilbourne</image:title>
<image:caption>The second collaboration with Daisy, one that clicked into place in so many ways. She was really wanting to keep it lo-fi, ideally tape or something similar. I have a friend who has this large VHS camera, so that instantly came to mind. It would need to be plugged in at all times, plus it was a bit restless & jittery: but that’s why you choose these formats ain’t it? After a few locations scouts, we found this warehouse on the day of filming. Dusty, filled with forgotten things. But beautiful light pouring through lichen covered windows in the ceiling that just turned the tape into liquid glowing gold. Everything felt good. The band performed on the take we chose in such an earnest way. Daisy gave it proper rockstar energy. We all felt it. Here it is, Radiohead’s ‘Weird Fishes.’ Performed by Daisy Kilbourne, Daniel Hall, Dylan Callanan & Marcus Vincent Produced by Marty Brown Mastered by Adam Dempsey Director, DOP & Editor: Jack Ralph Management: Rosie Mahoney</image:caption>

<image:title>Music Video - Whiskey Driven / Daisy Kilbourne</image:title>
<image:caption>Whiskey Driven marks the third music video I’ve been able to work with Daisy on, which is such a cool experience to be able to delve deeper each collaboration. This one is our biggest in scope yet, with multiple locations, bringing in my trusted DOP Scott Pope & the finale: a bangin’ party scene. I’m so happy with how this one has turned out, from the live performance section which just looks so warm and classy - to the 70’s coded party scene. We filmed this at Daisy’s sisters house, Lily, which has an incredible retro entertainment room - complete with shag pile carpet. Like a the previous music videos, a lot clicked. One of those shoots you look back on with a lot of nostalgia. Great energy and heaps of fun. <image:title>Music Video - Emu War / Danny Walsh Banned</image:title>
<image:caption>Madness. But a lot of fun. Danny came to me with his new song ‘Emu War’ - which chronicles the infamous Australian battle, quite literally, with the large bird: EMU. After some brainstorming I thought it would be fun to not go down any historical path, but rather take it in the direction of the band in a game show, with emus in the audience. Ideas flowed from there. The result is an off-beat, b-grade blood drenched battle for bird supremacy. It was my first time collaborating with DOP, Lewis Roberts, who was terrific in bringing some extra ideas to the clip; from a spinning camera rig for the ‘wheel of fortune’, to hand-held Emu POV carnage. Also a special mention to Candice Nelson for creating the ingenious emu costumes, hand-made - as well as some guts using stockings that were equally gruesome to even handle. Enjoy the silliness and goofs, but most of all, enjoy the tune. <image:title>Showreel & Contact - Director, Editor & Emerging Filmmaker.</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve found the pursuit of being filmmaker so varied, so unlike any preconceptions I had growing up. There’s so much I still have yet to do and show. In the present, I work as a full-time editor and post-production supervisor at Eric, Tom & Bruce. We make commercials and social content - it’s where I’ve learnt to hone myself as a professional video editor in both offline & online. Here I turnover projects to colour grade, sound and VFX - while also construct edits from the ground up. I work predominantly in DaVinci Resolve, but also can’t tolerate Premiere Pro & have a big soft spot of After Effects, which is where I do the majority of motion graphics and in-house VFX & compositing. Outside of this I follow a path more of passion, which is short film and music video. To date, I’ve shot on 16mm & 8mm film as well as a range of high end digital, with some of Melbourne’s top cinematographers. I’m so thankful to actually get these people involved in my own projects and it’s something I won’t get over. My latest project is a series of cinema shorts which we’ve been producing to show at a local arthouse cinema before each feature film. The audience gets to see our two minute films every night and that to me has been such a huge experience. I won’t list off the years of projects I’ve done alongside incredible bands, actors and artist - because that’s boring to read. Plus I’m sure it doesn’t sound that incredible to other people. So instead head on over to my film, music video and commercial pages and watch as you will. Overall I love working in the industry: advertising can be a fun and challenging space where I meet so many people and work on some really interesting things. Teaming this up with my passion for film (and eventually a feature pursuit...) and writing fiction has been a boiling pot of projects I would never take back. If you want to collaborate on anything, or have any questions about DaVinci Resolve because I want everyone to use it, then get in touch.</image:caption>

<image:title>OK MOTELS - OK MOTELS / CHARLTON</image:title>
<image:caption>OK Motels hosts incredible gigs in rural motels across Victoria, their favourite being the Charlton Motel...in Charlton. I was bought on to experience their events and capture what I saw, heard and loved. This is just some of it. FIND OK MOTELS HERE. More info on the event: We’re heading back to our favourite Mallee town and making a weekend of it! We’ve made some extra fun on the Friday night if you want to take a sickie, with the ‘Locals vs Blow-ins’ Pool Comp, Smarts, and a band very special to the OK fam, K5, and DJs. But if you can’t make it in time for that, don’t worry, Saturday is all about a ‘Friend Speed Dating Devo Tea’ with Tell Your Friends You Love Them and the ladies of the Charlton CWA. This event is a fundraiser for Victoria’s smallest CWA branch. We’ll also be launching the Charlton Mini Golf Club, out the back of the Charlton Motel. Let us all come together to celebrate its rising from the depths of soil and eucalyptus leaves – there’ll be a comp too, of course. This year also welcomes our brand new and improved OK Camp, right in the centre of town and within walking distance to the motel. You can BYO tent, or get Undersky to take care of it for you. Gary will look after you, and there’s toilets and showers! Keep your eyes and ears open for some fun little surprises popping up within camp too. Saturday night we welcome back Tropical Fuck Storm, our first ever headliner! We welcome new acts to the function room, say hello to Floodlights, and Our Carlson! With more acts to be announced. And, of course, we’ve got some seriously classy 70s meals for you, with classier cocktails to match.</image:caption>

<image:title>Confetti Western - Offline / Lewis Coleman</image:title>
Big ups to the crew and DOP Scott Pope, a serious collaborator of mine now!
